Digital Foot Print / Identity

A digital identity or footprint  is " an online or networked identity adopted or claimed in cyberspace by an individual, organization or electronic device. These users may also project more than one digital identity through multiple communities. In terms of digital identity management, key areas of concern are security and privacy." as defined by techopedia.

In my younger years, I can't say that I was too aware of the dangers of posting personal information or even pictures of myself on-line because in school, I can't remember ever having had a proper lesson on digital identity and the importance of being careful of what I post. It is obviously hugely important because it can cost you a career, it can cost your reputation of being a respectable citizen, and it can even cost some people their lives.

When it comes to my digital identity, I try to be as careful as I can. I want to be seen as a professional, especially now that I am about to graduate and hopefully get a job as a teacher. I took the liberty of googling myself and I found my two photos of myself, my twitter profile photo and my google profile photo. It feels weird seeing your photo pop up in a google search.

I found a website that suggests ideas for a lesson that one could do with students.http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2013/04/a-great-guide-on-teaching-students.html A neat activity that  you could do with your students is have them google themselves or have them use the website called pipl.com. This website searches for your digital trail.
I think it is incredibly important to make students aware of the dangers of posting information on line because once it is there, it is there forever, even if they have "deleted" it but I also think that it is important for us as teachers to share the benefits and the positives of posting appropriate information and sharing our thoughts and ideas with the world, in appropriate ways of course.
